The first historical movie of 2019 Manikarnika based on the life of our brave Jhansi ki Rani Lakshmi Bai has finally hit the theatres after various hiccups during the film making. It’s one of those chapters from Indian history, which we are aware of as covered in our history syllabus but we are taught in a very limited way. The movie begins with background narration of Amitabh Bachchan in his famous baritone voice that sets the stage of what’s next in store as the introduction scene of Lakshmi Bai shows her archery skill along with the love for animals followed by her sword skills. Some of the highpoints in the movie are, when Englishmen force her to bow down where she refuses, when the rani saves the life of calf, when her son and husband dies and she have to follow a widows rules but instead she chooses…

In recent times we are used to see  biopics which bollywood is churning out every year as it guarantees the returns to makers of the film if the film is made beautiful. Secondly, they don’t have to work on the script which is the biggest task that makes or breaks a film. The year 2019 has already potrayed our former Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh though it is not a biopic but his story based on the book The Accidental Prime Minister. 2 more biopics on our present PM Sh. Narendra Modi are filming and might release this year. As far as biopics on political figures are concerned then 2019 is the year wherein all of these are being released. People are saying that these are propaganda films to win elections this year but I have a different view, let’s not get into that. Mr. Bal Keshav Thackeray needs no…

On 11th August last year, a movie released by the name of Toilet Ek Prem Katha (TEPK) where most of us were cracking jokes on the title of the film, some even went on to say Film industry is running short of titles. After a hiatus of 6 months another flick called Padman released yesterday where the first half of the word is a taboo and no one dares to take the name in public. It takes immense courage to make a Film on such subject and one should appreciate the whole team of Padman for venturing into this unusual subject which at the same time is socially relevant. Looking at the current rural scenario in our country, doing a commercial film on such subject  with A-list actors makes sense as it will have greater penetration rather than a documentary.  Cinema by far remains the most powerful tool which has…

The year 2017 has finally come to an end and except a few this year will remembered as a dry and worse as far as box office is concerned. But the release of TZH on the eve of Christmas has given reasons to merry for all the involved in this film industry. Salman Khan who was written off after the failure of Tubelight has reckoned with twice the force with TZH which is very much visible in the advance booking report which is an all time high for Hindi flick. Let’s first understand the economics of TZH, the film is the most expensive Yashraj production costing 150cr excluding Salman fee. 130cr is the cost of production and 20cr is for film promotion. Salman is reported to be paid 125cr. The overseas rights were sold for 30cr, music rights for 10cr, satellite rights for 50cr. 30cr subsidy was received for shooting…

We do not watch all the movies on the silver screen and in this process we miss out some really damn good movies which are short of marketing and big star cast. SMZA is one of the gems of 2017 Hindi flicks. I was fortunate to see the flick after some good word of mouth began to pour in. The story of the film is blended so well that you connect to the characters instantly. SMZA is a terrific portrayal of our society which is been nicely packaged with crisp editing and powerhouse performance by its lead and a balanced performance given by its supporting cast. The film depicts the harsh reality of today’s Indian families who does gender discrimination, their appetite for maximum dowry and corruption in government offices. The movie doesn’t have a single dull moment. The chemistry between the lead pair is very refreshing. Overall, if you…

I have always written movie reviews when I have loved the concept  and execution of that particular  Film. After a long time I have been prompted to write and this is like a comeback of sorts. I watched the subject  movie with a sense of feel good movie to be enjoyed during festivities as I have never been a fan of Golmaal Series . Rohit Shetty is a great director of today’s film making who churns out entertainers with superb consistency rate and that too with a hit tag. Out of his all the films my favorite  is Singham part one which I feel has a high recall value and can be viewed umpteen number of times for the paisa vasool entertainment factor. But after watching the 4th in the series of Golmaal, I feel that Rohit has evolved as a director over the years. To handle all the characters…

After touching our hearts in his last outing Bajrangi Bhaijaan, all the eyes were set for Kabir Khan’s next thriller Phantom. Unlike its predecessor this one deals with an eye for eye approach or revenge in simple terms. This is the genre for which Kabir Khan is best known for. He started his career by making documentaries like Beyond India/Indian National Army and then moved on to cinema with Kabul Express/New York/Ek Tha Tiger. New York was based on 9/11 attacks and Phantom is the product of 26/11 Mumbai attacks. First thing first this is not a movie based on true story like Manjhi but the director’s vision of what could have been done to the perpetrators of 26/11 masterminds who are currently living luxurious lives even after killing more than 166 innocent lives. India was brought down on knees on that fateful day. Here the director questions if America…

In the reigning seasons of Hollywood/South movies/old classic Hindi remakes, Bollywood seems to have found its new love in the biopics. After the successful Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom many more are in the list to follow like MS Dhoni, Azhar and so on. But what I liked the most in this biopic of Manjhi is production house Viacom18 has poured full faith in the story of this ordinary man who succeeds in doing an extra ordinary task and before this even I did not know who is this Manjhi as in other biopics we have some information of the person on whom the movie is being made. The story is of a common man Dasrath Manjhi who is from Ghelore village in Bihar. He belongs to the lower caste a labour. The movie is set during the period when India had just got its Independence. The speciality of this…

Acche din aa gaye, someone made the statement off late that Bollywood is going through good days of life and looking at the box office figures of the last 2 movies Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan one cannot deny the fact that if something special is served audience is compelled to visit the theatre. With both these movies still going strong, chances are paper thin for this week release Drishyam to take earth shattering opening but what we assure you is the good days are here to stay for this industry as Drishyam is a well made film which doesn’t have any buzz around yet will rise to the occasion with word of mouth. Its a thriller which is different from other suspense movies. The basic difference is generally you do not know till the end who is the culprit but in this flick you know who has done it but…

In the last fortnight I was fortunate enough to catch the two Indian films that have come across as a big surprise not only for me but even the critics and audience world over. The first was Bahubali made by a prominent South Indian Filmmaker SS Rajamouli and the other is Bajrangi Bhaijaan directed by eminent Bollywood filmmaker Kabir Khan. Following the release of Bahubali, there was a huge stir mainly negative on the twitter against Bollywood that South Indian film makers have been successful in experimenting different subjects whether its EEGA, I, ROBOT, MAGADHEERA whereas Bollywood has been unable to deliver magnum opus movies and allegedly copy the other films be it south Indian/Korean/Hollywood. No doubt to some extent this is a bitter truth. If Bahubali was an Indian answer to Hollywood movies 300/Lord of the Rings then Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a befitting reply to the recent allegations. BB…
